Who can get the Taiwan nomad visa

Qualification runs through one of eight professional fields: science and technology, economy, education, culture and art, sport, finance, law, and architecture. Within each field there are usually several ways to qualify, and only one of them is income-based. Because the card carries open work authorization, it does not care whether your income comes from an employer, your own clients, or a business you own — what it screens is whether you are a recognised professional in your field.

There is no requirement to already have a job in Taiwan, no employer sponsorship, and — unusually — no criminal-record check or mandatory insurance at the application stage. Taiwanese nationals apply through other channels; the Gold Card is for foreign professionals.

  • Accepts: Remote employees, Freelancers, Business owners
  • No health-insurance requirement
  • No criminal-record check
  • Not open to citizens of Taiwan

The income requirement in detail

The salary route asks for an average monthly income of NT$160,000 before tax — about NT$1,920,000 a year — evidenced on any annual tax statement from the last three years. The Workforce Development Agency divides the year's declared salary by twelve and checks it against that line, and the income can come from work anywhere in the world so long as it appears on an official tax document.

The important nuance is that this is just one route. Most of the eight fields also offer credential-based qualification — a senior position, awards, patents, or recognised expertise — with no income floor at all. So the NT$160,000 salary is best read as a threshold for the money route, not a universal price of entry. Family members join as dependants without changing your qualification.

How to apply for the Taiwan nomad visa

The whole application is online through the official Gold Card platform. You select your field, pick the validity you want, and upload either a qualifying tax statement (for the salary route) or evidence of your professional standing (for a credential route). The fee depends on your nationality and the validity you choose, because it folds in a resident-visa charge that varies by country.

Two agencies review the file in sequence — the Workforce Development Agency assesses your professional qualification, then the National Immigration Agency handles the residence side — which is why processing typically runs a few weeks and can stretch longer. Once approved, the single card does the work of four permits, and you enroll in Taiwan's National Health Insurance after six months of residence.

  1. 1Pick one of the eight professional fields — science and technology, economy, education, culture and art, sport, finance, law, or architecture — and identify your qualification route.
  2. 2If using the salary route, confirm you can show an average monthly income of NT$160,000 (before tax) on any annual tax statement from the last three years; otherwise line up credential evidence for your field.
  3. 3Create an account on the online Gold Card platform and choose one, two, or three years of validity.
  4. 4Upload your passport, photo, and route-specific proof — tax statement for the salary route, or qualifications, awards, and experience for a credential route — then pay the fee, which varies by nationality and validity.
  5. 5The application goes through a two-stage review by the Workforce Development Agency and the National Immigration Agency; on approval you receive the Gold Card, which combines a work permit, resident visa, ARC, and re-entry permit.
  6. 6If applying from abroad, collect your resident visa and enter Taiwan; enroll in National Health Insurance after six months of residence.

Documents you'll need

  • Valid passport and a passport-style photograph
  • For the salary route: an annual tax statement from within the last three years showing average monthly income of NT$160,000 or more, or employer certification where tax documents are restricted
  • For a credential route: evidence of professional standing in your field (senior position, awards, patents, publications, or qualifications)
  • Current or intended employment evidence and a CV, as applicable to your route
  • For accompanying family: proof of relationship for dependent applications

Taxes on the Taiwan nomad visa

Taiwan is attractive on tax, and the Gold Card sharpens the edge. The system is largely territorial: foreign-source income sits outside regular income tax and only surfaces under the Alternative Minimum Tax for residents with substantial overseas income above a multi-million-NT$ exemption. On top of that, first-time qualifying foreign professionals receive a 50% exemption on salary income above NT$3 million for their first five years, and their overseas income is left out of the AMT during that window. The genuine grey area is whether remote work you physically perform in Taiwan counts as Taiwan-source income once you pass 183 days of residence — that question has no clean answer, so full-time residents should take local advice.

This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your home country and any tax treaty. See our guide to nomad visa taxes and confirm with a qualified adviser.

Bringing your family

A spouse and minor children can live in Taiwan on dependent residence linked to your Gold Card. There is no per-dependant income uplift and no separate qualification for them to meet — their status flows from yours. It is a workable family route, and because Gold Card time counts toward permanent residence, a family can build toward settling rather than cycling through renewals.

How Taiwan compares

Against the other Asian options, Taiwan is the most flexible high-skill choice. Where South Korea's F-1-D demands an employer and a year's tenure, and Japan's visa caps you at six card-less months, the Gold Card asks only that you qualify as a professional — through salary or credentials — and then hands you open work rights for up to three years. Malaysia's DE Rantau is cheaper to qualify for but leads nowhere, while Taiwan offers a permanent-residence pathway and strong tax treatment. If you are a recognised professional who wants a long-term Asian base, the Gold Card is usually the strongest card in the deck.

What applicants actually run into

The mistake people make is assuming they must earn NT$160,000 a month. Many applicants qualify faster on a credential route — a senior role, a notable track record, or field-specific recognition — without touching the salary test, so it is worth checking your field's non-income options before gathering pay evidence. If you do use the salary route, remember the WDA reads a tax statement, not a payslip, and converts foreign salary at the Bank of Taiwan's historical rate, so borderline earners should leave a margin. The two-stage review means timelines vary, and the tax residency question is the one to plan around early: living in Taiwan full-time changes your tax picture in ways a short visit does not.

Taiwan digital nomad visa: FAQ

How much income do I need for the Taiwan Gold Card?
The salary route requires an average monthly income of NT$160,000 before tax — about NT$1,920,000 a year — shown on any annual tax statement from the last three years. But most professional fields also offer credential-based routes with no income requirement, so salary is only one way to qualify.
Is the Taiwan Gold Card a digital nomad visa?
It is not branded as one, but it works as an excellent remote-professional visa. It grants open work rights without a Taiwanese employer, lasts one to three years, and counts toward permanent residence, which makes it a stronger long-term option than most dedicated nomad visas.
How long is the Taiwan Gold Card valid?
You choose one, two, or three years at application, and it can be renewed. Time on the card counts toward permanent residence, so it can lead to settling in Taiwan rather than a fixed maximum stay.
Do I have to work for a Taiwanese company to get the Gold Card?
No. The card comes with open work authorization and no employer sponsorship. Remote workers, freelancers, and business owners can all hold it, and your income can come from anywhere in the world.
How does Taiwan tax Gold Card holders?
Taiwan is largely territorial, so foreign-source income mostly sits outside regular income tax and only enters the Alternative Minimum Tax for high earners. First-time qualifying professionals also get a 50% exemption on salary over NT$3 million for five years. Whether remote work done in Taiwan is Taiwan-source is unsettled — take advice if you live here full-time.
Does the Taiwan Gold Card require health insurance or a police check?
No mandatory private insurance or criminal-record check is required to apply. Gold Card holders enroll in Taiwan's National Health Insurance after six months of residence.
