Who can get the Japan nomad visa
Two gates matter: your passport and your income. You must be a citizen of one of roughly 49 eligible countries and regions — the list includes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the EU states, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan — because Japan restricts the visa to nations with the right visa and tax arrangements. Beyond that, you work remotely for non-Japanese entities, whether as an employee, a freelancer, or a business owner.
The hard line is that you may not provide services to companies in Japan. All of the work must be for overseas employers or clients. Japanese citizens are, by definition, outside the scheme.
- ✓ Accepts: Remote employees, Freelancers, Business owners
- ! Private health insurance required
- ✓ No criminal-record check
- • Not open to citizens of Japan
The income requirement in detail
The income floor is a flat ¥10,000,000 a year, and it is one of the highest of any digital nomad visa in the world. Unlike Spain or South Korea, it is not indexed to a minimum wage or national income figure — it is a fixed yen number that only moves if the rules are rewritten. You prove it with tax returns, income statements, or contracts showing the earnings come from outside Japan.
Family does not change the number. The ¥10,000,000 is measured against the main applicant alone; a spouse and children can come along without raising the floor, provided they each carry their own insurance and hold an eligible nationality.
How to apply for the Japan nomad visa
There are two ways in. The cleaner route is to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) from a Regional Immigration Bureau first — often through a proxy already in Japan — and then take that CoE to a Japanese embassy or consulate for the visa. Presenting the CoE lets you omit re-submitting the income, insurance, and activity paperwork at the consulate. The alternative is to apply for the visa directly at a consulate abroad without a CoE, which can be slower.
Processing runs anywhere from about a week to two months depending on the route and caseload. Note that you receive no residence card — stays under six months don't get one — so you cannot open the kind of bank account or sign the kind of lease that a residence card unlocks. You must enter within three months of the CoE being issued.
- 1Check that your nationality is on Japan's eligible list — roughly 49 countries and regions that hold both a visa-exemption and a tax-treaty arrangement with Japan — and that your annual income is at least ¥10,000,000 from non-Japanese sources.
- 2Buy private insurance covering death, injury, and illness during your stay in Japan, with at least ¥10,000,000 of coverage.
- 3Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) at a Regional Immigration Bureau, submitting proof of income, your insurance, and a description of your planned remote work — or apply for the visa directly at a Japanese embassy or consulate.
- 4With the CoE, lodge the visa application at your local Japanese embassy or consulate and pay the visa fee; presenting the CoE lets you skip re-submitting the income, insurance, and activity documents.
- 5Enter Japan within three months of the CoE being issued; you receive a six-month 'Designated Activities' stay and no residence card is issued.
- 6Leave Japan within six months — the status cannot be extended, and you cannot re-apply until six months after you depart.

- Completed visa application form and a passport photograph
- For accompanying family: proof of relationship and each member's own insurance
Taxes on the Japan nomad visa
Japan does not tax you on this visa, and the reason is structural rather than a special exemption. Japanese tax residency hinges on holding a domicile in the country or staying for a year or more, not on a 183-day count. Because the digital nomad status is capped at six months and cannot be renewed, you remain a non-resident, and non-residents are taxed only on Japan-source income. Your foreign salary or client income therefore stays outside the Japanese tax net. The trade-off is the flip side of the same rule: you can't stay long enough to become a resident even if you wanted to.
This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your home country and any tax treaty. See our guide to nomad visa taxes and confirm with a qualified adviser.
Bringing your family
A spouse and children can join you on a mirror status, "Spouse or Child of Digital Nomad," for the same six-month period. Each family member needs their own private health insurance, and — a real constraint — they must also come from a nationality Japan accepts for the scheme, with a wider list of countries recognised for family members than for the main applicant. There is no extra income requirement per dependant; the single ¥10,000,000 figure covers the household.
How Japan compares
Among Asia's nomad visas, Japan sits at the demanding end on money and the short end on time. Its ¥10,000,000 floor is far above Malaysia's USD 24,000 tech line and Thailand's savings-based DTV, and roughly in line with South Korea's twice-GNI requirement — but Korea gives you up to three years while Japan gives you six months and no renewal. Taiwan's Gold Card is the closest high-skill neighbour and vastly more flexible, running one to three years with a route to permanent residence. Choose Japan when the goal is a defined half-year in Japan itself, not a long-term base.
| Country | Min income | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000,000 JPY/yr (≈ $61,500) | 6 months, not renewable | |
| 84,960,000 KRW/yr (≈ $57,100) | 1 year, renewable up to 3 years | |
| 160,000 TWD/mo (≈ $4,940) | 3 years, renewable | |
| 500,000 THB (≈ $14,900) in savings | 5 years, renewable | |
| $24,000/yr | 1 year, renewable up to 2 years |
What applicants actually run into
The most common wall is nationality: applicants assume any passport works, but the eligible list is finite, and being from a visa-exemption country is not enough on its own — your country also needs the tax-treaty link. After that, the income proof trips people up, because ¥10,000,000 is a high bar and the evidence must clearly show foreign sourcing. Plan around the no-residence-card reality: without one, everyday banking and longer leases are hard, so many holders rely on short-term rentals and keep foreign accounts. Finally, respect the six-month exit — there is no extension, and you can't return on the same visa until six months after you leave.
