Who can get the South Africa nomad visa

The visa is for people whose work and income sit outside South Africa: remote employees of a foreign company, freelancers with foreign clients, and owners of a business based abroad. South African citizens cannot apply. The core gate is a gross annual income of ZAR 650,976, proven with bank statements and an employment contract or business documents.

Background checks are strict. You need a police clearance certificate from every country where you have lived for more than 12 months in the past five years, which for well-travelled applicants means collecting several certificates and timing them so none expire before you file.

  • Accepts: Remote employees, Freelancers, Business owners
  • ! Private health insurance required
  • ! Criminal-record check required
  • Age: 18+
  • Not open to citizens of South Africa

The income requirement in detail

The threshold is a gross annual income of ZAR 650,976. That number matters because it is a reduction: the visa originally required the equivalent of ZAR 1,000,000 a year, and the Third Amendment of 9 October 2024 cut it to ZAR 650,976, widening the pool of people who qualify. Because it is set in rand, the dollar or pound figure you need shifts with the exchange rate, but the test the Department of Home Affairs applies is the rand amount.

You demonstrate it with recent bank statements and proof that the income is foreign-sourced. Unlike programs that add a fixed sum per dependant, South Africa handles family through separate accompanying visas rather than raising this headline number.

How to apply for the South Africa nomad visa

You can file at a South African embassy or a VFS Global visa centre in your home country, or in-country through the Department of Home Affairs if you already hold an eligible status. The government fee is modest — around ZAR 425 — but VFS service charges are layered on top, and processing generally runs about six to eight weeks, longer once centre backlogs are factored in.

The process settled into routine operation through 2025 after the 2024 regulatory changes, so the main variability now comes from document collection and centre queues rather than uncertainty about whether the visa exists.

  1. 1Confirm your gross income is at least ZAR 650,976 a year from an employer or your own business located outside South Africa.
  2. 2Gather three months of recent bank statements, your employment contract or business proof, and evidence the income is foreign-sourced.
  3. 3Obtain a police clearance certificate from every country where you have lived for more than 12 months in the past five years, and arrange valid international health insurance covering inpatient and outpatient care.
  4. 4Decide where to file: at a South African embassy or VFS visa centre in your home country, or in-country through the Department of Home Affairs if you are already in South Africa on an eligible status.
  5. 5Submit the application with the DHA fee (about ZAR 425) plus any VFS service fee, and allow roughly six to eight weeks for a decision.
  6. 6If you will stay long enough to trigger it, register with SARS as required and set up provisional tax; the visa can be issued for up to three years and renewed before expiry.

Taxes on the South Africa nomad visa

This is where South Africa differs sharply from Namibia or Seychelles. The visa is wired to the tax system. If you are tax-resident in a country that has a Double Taxation Agreement with South Africa, you must register with SARS once you are present for more than 183 days — roughly six months — in any 12-month period. If your home country has no DTA with South Africa, you must register with SARS regardless of how long you stay. Registration pulls you into provisional tax, with returns due twice a year, in August and February.

The rule has moved around: early versions offered an automatic exemption for short stays, which later became an exemption you have to apply for. The safe assumption for any stay past six months is that SARS registration is on the table, so get local tax advice before you commit to a long stint.

This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your home country and any tax treaty. See our guide to nomad visa taxes and confirm with a qualified adviser.

Bringing your family

Family is allowed, but not through a per-dependant income add-on. A spouse joins on an accompanying-spouse visa and children on dependant visas, each filed alongside your remote work application. You still have to show you can support them, and the police-clearance and insurance requirements apply to adult family members too, but there is no fixed figure stacked onto the ZAR 650,976 threshold. Plan each person's paperwork on its own track.

How South Africa compares

South Africa is the long-stay heavyweight of African nomad visas. Namibia is cheaper on income and lighter on paperwork but caps you at a non-renewable six months; Mauritius offers a comparable one-year Premium Visa; Seychelles removes the income bar but sits far offshore. What South Africa alone offers in the region is a three-year, renewable runway in a large, well-connected economy with strong cities and infrastructure. The price of that runway is the SARS exposure — no neighbour ties a nomad visa to a tax-registration trigger the way South Africa does. Weigh it against Mauritius if you want length without the tax complication.

What applicants actually run into

The two recurring failure points are police clearances and the tax question. Applicants who have lived in several countries underestimate how long it takes to collect a certificate from each one, and a single expired or missing clearance stalls the file — start these early and stagger them so they are all valid on submission day. On tax, people fixate on qualifying and forget the back end: cross 183 days from a DTA country, or arrive from a non-DTA country at all, and SARS registration with provisional filings in August and February becomes your responsibility. Budget six to eight weeks or more for processing through VFS, keep three clean months of statements above the ZAR 650,976 line, and take South African tax advice before you plan a multi-year stay.

South Africa digital nomad visa: FAQ

How much income do I need for the South Africa remote work visa in 2026?
A gross annual income of at least ZAR 650,976. This was reduced from the original ZAR 1,000,000 by the Third Amendment of the Immigration Regulations published on 9 October 2024. You prove it with bank statements and a contract or business documents showing the income is foreign-sourced.
How long can I stay in South Africa on the remote work visa?
The visa can be issued for up to three years and is renewable before it expires. That is the longest stay among African nomad programs — Namibia caps at six months and Mauritius at one year — which makes South Africa the option for people who want to settle in.
Do I have to register with SARS on the South Africa nomad visa?
Possibly. If you are tax-resident in a country with a Double Taxation Agreement with South Africa, you must register with SARS after more than 183 days (about six months) in any 12-month period. If your home country has no such agreement, you must register regardless of how long you stay. Registration means provisional tax with filings in August and February.
Can freelancers and business owners get the South Africa remote work visa?
Yes. Remote employees of a foreign company, freelancers with foreign clients, and owners of a business based outside South Africa can all apply. South African citizens cannot. The common requirement is proving ZAR 650,976 of gross annual income from outside the country.
Can I bring my family on the South Africa remote work visa?
Yes, but through separate visas rather than one income figure. A spouse applies on an accompanying-spouse visa and children on dependant visas, filed alongside yours. You show you can support them, and adult family members face the same police-clearance and insurance requirements.
How long does the South Africa remote work visa take to process?
Generally about six to eight weeks from submission, and longer once VFS visa-centre backlogs are counted. Collecting police clearances from every country you have lived in for over 12 months usually takes longer than the decision itself, so start that step early.
