Who can get the Latvia nomad visa
There are exactly two ways in. You are either an employee of a company registered in an OECD member state, or you are self-employed and registered in an OECD member state, and in both cases you must be able to do the work remotely from Latvia. PMLP is explicit that visa holders have no right to take employment inside Latvia. Freelancers qualify only if they are formally registered as self-employed in a qualifying country, so an unregistered gig worker will not pass the test.
You also need at least six months of history with that employer or business, which rules out anyone who has just started. Citizens of Latvia and other EU/EEA states do not use this visa.
- ✓ Accepts: Remote employees, Freelancers, Business owners
- ! Private health insurance required
- ✓ No criminal-record check
- • Age: 18+
- • Not open to citizens of Latvia
The income requirement in detail
The income floor is 2.5 times the previous year's average gross monthly wage in Latvia, as published by the Central Statistical Bureau. The figure PMLP currently shows is €4,213 a month, based on the 2024 average wage. Latvia's 2025 average gross wage came in at €1,815, so when PMLP refreshes the calculation the floor is set to rise to about €4,538. The widely repeated €3,400 number is out of date, and one older PMLP page even still displays €3,192.50, so check the live figure before you apply.
You show the income across the six months before applying, through an employer certificate or self-employment records. There is no family multiplier, because the visa does not add dependants.
How to apply for the Latvia nomad visa
You apply for the long-stay (type D) visa, either at a Latvian embassy abroad or, if you are already in Latvia legally, at PMLP. The state fee is €90 for standard processing and €180 if you file close to the deadline and need it expedited. You will submit an employer or self-employment document confirming the OECD registration and your current status, six months of income proof, and health insurance.
The insurance requirement is specific: the policy must be valid in Latvia and across the Schengen area, with the insurer's minimum liability set at no less than €42,600.
- 1Confirm the OECD tie: your employer must be registered in an OECD member state, or you must be self-employed and registered in one, with at least six months of history in that role.
- 2Check you clear the income floor, currently €4,213 a month, across the last six months, and gather the proof: an employer certificate or self-employment records plus bank statements.
- 3Buy health insurance valid in Latvia and across the Schengen area with a minimum liability of €42,600.
- 4Apply for the long-stay (type D) visa at a Latvian embassy abroad, or at PMLP if you are already in Latvia legally, and pay the €90 fee (€180 if you need expedited handling).
- 5Submit your documents and wait for the decision, then enter or stay in Latvia on the visa.
- 6Before the first year ends, apply once to extend for a second year if you still qualify.

- Employer certificate or self-employment registration confirming OECD-country registration and current status
- Proof of at least six months of income at or above the threshold (bank statements, pay records)

- Completed long-stay visa application form

Taxes on the Latvia nomad visa
Latvia taxes residents on their worldwide income and treats you as resident once you spend 183 days or more here in any 12-month period, or keep a permanent home in the country. Stay under that line and remain tax-resident somewhere else, and Latvia will not tax your foreign income. Go over it and progressive Latvian rates apply. There is no special nomad tax regime, so the 183-day threshold is the number to manage across a two-year stay.
This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your home country and any tax treaty. See our guide to nomad visa taxes and confirm with a qualified adviser.
How Latvia compares
Latvia's OECD-employer rule sets it apart from every other European nomad visa, and it cuts both ways. If your job is with an OECD-country company, it is a clean, two-year Baltic option; if it is not, you are simply ineligible where Estonia or Croatia might still take you. On money it lands near Estonia's level and above Hungary and Croatia. Estonia next door is the natural comparison, with a similar income bar and a slicker digital process, while Latvia's distinguishing move is that hard OECD tie.
| Country | Min income | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| €4,210/mo (≈ $4,810) | 1 year, renewable up to 2 years | |
| €4,500/mo (≈ $5,140) | 1 year, not renewable | |
| €3,000/mo (≈ $3,430) | 1 year, renewable up to 2 years | |
| 27,600 RON/mo (≈ $6,020) | 1 year, renewable up to 2 years | |
| 156,500 CZK (≈ $7,380) in savings | 1 year, renewable | |
| €3,620/mo (≈ $4,140) | 18 months, not renewable |
What applicants actually run into
The OECD requirement is where applications quietly fail. People assume any foreign employer works, then discover their company's registration sits outside the OECD list and there is no workaround. Confirm your employer's or your own self-employment registration against the OECD membership list before you spend time on documents. The second trap is the income figure: it moves each year with Latvian wages, and PMLP's own pages have carried conflicting numbers, so budget against the current live threshold rather than an old blog post. The €42,600 insurance floor is well above a standard travel policy, and the six-month employment history is mandatory, so a brand-new contract will not carry you.
