Who can get the Cyprus nomad visa

Three groups qualify: employees working remotely for an employer based outside Cyprus, freelancers or self-employed people serving foreign clients, and owners of a business registered abroad — all performing the work through telecommunications technology. The common thread is that your income must originate outside Cyprus. Cypriot nationals and EU/EEA citizens don't use this route.

The programme was originally pitched at tech and remote-services workers, but eligibility rests on the remote, foreign-income nature of the work rather than a strict sector list. The real constraints are the net-income bar and the annual quota — because the scheme is capped, timing your application matters in a way it doesn't for uncapped programmes.

  • Accepts: Remote employees, Freelancers, Business owners
  • ! Private health insurance required
  • ! Criminal-record check required
  • Age: 18+
  • Not open to citizens of Cyprus

The income requirement in detail

The threshold is €3,500 a month net — after tax and social contributions — which is a higher hurdle than it looks, because programmes that test gross income effectively ask for less take-home. It is a fixed scheme figure rather than a wage-linked one. Family raises it proportionally: add 20% of the base for a spouse or partner and 15% per child, so a couple needs €4,200 a month and a couple with one child around €4,725.

You prove the income with roughly six months of bank statements showing consistent deposits, backed by your employment contract or business documents. Because the requirement is net, keep your evidence clear about what lands in your account after deductions rather than headline salary.

How to apply for the Cyprus nomad visa

Unlike consular nomad visas, you generally enter Cyprus first and then apply in-country: within three months of arrival you submit the MVIS8 form at the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia. The fees are modest — €70 for the application and €70 for the Alien Registration Certificate — and you give biometrics as part of registration.

The one moving part to watch is the quota. Cyprus caps the number of permits (raised to 1,000 in late 2025), and when the ceiling is reached, intake pauses until it reopens. That makes Cyprus less of an "apply any time" programme than Spain or Portugal, so confirm the quota is open before you commit to the move.

  1. 1Confirm you are a non-EU/EEA national who works remotely using telecommunications for an employer or clients based outside Cyprus, with net income of at least €3,500 a month (more if family joins).
  2. 2Enter Cyprus and, within three months, book to submit the MVIS8 application at the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia — but check the quota first, as the annual cap (1,000 permits from late 2025) can close intake.
  3. 3Assemble proof of income (about six months of bank statements plus your employment or business contracts), health insurance covering inpatient and outpatient care, and criminal record certificates from both your country of citizenship and your country of residence.
  4. 4Secure a Cyprus address (rental or purchase agreement) and prepare copies for each family member you are including.
  5. 5Submit the application, pay the €70 application fee and €70 alien-registration fee, and give biometrics for your Alien Registration Certificate.
  6. 6Collect the one-year residence permit; renew before it expires for up to three years total. Note that any accompanying family members cannot work in Cyprus.

Documents you'll need

  • Valid passport
  • Completed MVIS8 application form
  • Proof of remote work: an employment contract with a foreign company, or business/registration documents plus client invoices
  • Bank statements from the last six months showing net income of at least €3,500/month
  • Private health insurance valid in Cyprus covering inpatient and outpatient care
  • Criminal record certificate from your country of citizenship and your country of residence
  • Proof of accommodation in Cyprus (rental or purchase agreement)

Taxes on the Cyprus nomad visa

The visa itself grants no tax residency, and plenty of holders deliberately stay under 183 days a year to avoid triggering it. If you do become resident — at 183 days, or under the 60-day rule if you spend 60-plus days here, aren't tax-resident anywhere else, and keep local ties — Cyprus taxes worldwide income, but with two softeners. Employment income runs on a progressive scale with a nil band up to €19,500, and new residents can elect non-domiciled status, which exempts dividends, interest and most passive income for up to 17 years.

That non-dom shelter is why Cyprus attracts nomads whose income is investment-heavy rather than salaried. If your money is ordinary employment income, the benefit is smaller, and you should model the progressive rates before assuming Cyprus is low-tax for your situation.

This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your home country and any tax treaty. See our guide to nomad visa taxes and confirm with a qualified adviser.

Bringing your family

A spouse or partner and dependent children can join on permits that track the main applicant's, but with a hard limitation: family members are not allowed to work or run a business in Cyprus. Each dependant also raises the net-income requirement — 20% more for a spouse or partner and 15% per child — so a family application needs a comfortable margin over €3,500. Plan around the no-work rule if a partner intends to keep earning; they'd generally need their own qualifying status.

How Cyprus compares

Cyprus and Malta are the natural comparison, and they split by income type. Cyprus asks for €3,500 net a month and shelters passive income through non-dom status; Malta asks for €42,000 gross a year and taxes work income at a flat 10%. If your earnings are dividends and interest, Cyprus wins; if they're salaried remote work, Malta's flat rate can be better. Against Spain and Portugal, Cyprus is capped and in-country rather than consular, and its three-year ceiling is shorter than Spain's five-year runway to permanent residence. Greece is cheaper on income but taxes residents more heavily.

What applicants actually run into

The two things that trip applicants are the net-income proof and the quota. Because €3,500 is a net figure, statements that only show gross salary or lumpy freelance deposits get questioned — line up six clean months that clearly show at least €3,500 landing after deductions. On timing, check the permit cap before you book flights; applicants have arrived to find intake temporarily closed. Get both criminal record certificates (citizenship and residence country) early, since sourcing the second one catches people out, and don't assume a partner can work on arrival — they can't. Budget for private health insurance covering inpatient and outpatient care for the full stay, as a basic travel policy won't satisfy the department.

Cyprus digital nomad visa: FAQ

How much income do I need for the Cyprus digital nomad visa in 2026?
At least €3,500 per month net — after tax and social contributions. A spouse or partner adds 20% (bringing it to €4,200) and each child adds 15% of the base (about €525). You prove it with roughly six months of bank statements.
Is the Cyprus digital nomad visa income requirement net or gross?
Net. The €3,500 figure is what remains after tax and contributions, which makes it stricter than programmes that test gross income. Your bank statements need to show that amount consistently arriving after deductions.
How long can I stay in Cyprus on the digital nomad visa?
The permit is issued for one year and can be renewed for up to three years in total. It runs under the visitor category and is not, by itself, a permanent-residence route.
Does Cyprus have a quota for the digital nomad visa?
Yes. The scheme is capped, and the annual quota was doubled to 1,000 permits in late 2025. When the cap is reached, applications pause until it reopens, so check availability before applying.
Will I pay tax in Cyprus as a digital nomad?
Only if you become a tax resident — at 183 days, or under the 60-day rule. Even then, new residents can claim non-dom status, which exempts dividends and interest for up to 17 years; employment income is taxed progressively with a nil band up to €19,500. Many nomads stay under 183 days.
Can my family work in Cyprus on the digital nomad visa?
No. A spouse, partner and children can get residence permits linked to yours, but they are not permitted to work or run a business in Cyprus. Each dependant also increases the net-income requirement (20% for a spouse, 15% per child).
Where do I apply for the Cyprus digital nomad visa?
In-country. You enter Cyprus and then submit the MVIS8 application at the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia within three months of arrival, paying a €70 application fee and a €70 registration fee.
