Who can get the Colombia nomad visa
The visa is open to remote employees, freelancers, and owners of a digital business, as long as the income comes from outside Colombia. There's no degree requirement and no fixed profession list. Colombian nationals can't apply. The main gate is income and the way it's proven: the Cancillería reads your bank statements, not a contract's headline salary.
Health insurance covering your stay is required, but — unusually — an apostilled criminal-record check is not part of the nomad-visa file.
- ✓ Accepts: Remote employees, Freelancers, Business owners
- ! Private health insurance required
- ✓ No criminal-record check
- • Age: 18+
- • Not open to citizens of Colombia
The income requirement in detail
The threshold is three times Colombia's monthly minimum wage (SMMLV), which rose to COP 1,746,882 for 2026, putting the requirement at about COP 5.24 million a month. Converted, that lands somewhere in the low-to-mid four figures in US dollars depending on the exchange rate the Ministry applies on the day it opens your file — which is exactly why officials tell applicants to leave a safety margin.
The strict part is the proof. Each of your last three monthly bank statements must individually show income at or above the threshold; the Cancillería does not average lean and strong months together, so an uneven freelance income needs three genuinely qualifying months in a row.
How to apply for the Colombia nomad visa
Everything happens on the Cancillería's online visa portal. You upload your passport, photo, three bank statements, a short motivation letter, and proof of insurance, then pay a study fee of around US$55. If it's approved you pay the issuance fee — roughly US$180 — and the e-visa arrives by email, often within days to a few weeks. After you land you register with Migración Colombia and collect your Cédula de Extranjería, the local ID card, within 15 days.
- 1Confirm your income clears three times the Colombian minimum wage (about COP 5.24 million a month in 2026) on each of your last three bank statements — averaging is not accepted.
- 2Write a short motivation letter describing your remote work or digital business and that your income comes from outside Colombia.
- 3Buy health insurance that covers you for the length of your stay in Colombia.
- 4Create an account on the Cancillería's online visa portal and upload your passport, photo, bank statements, letter, and insurance.
- 5Pay the study fee (about US$55) and, once approved, the visa issuance fee (about US$180); the total is roughly US$230.
- 6Receive the e-visa by email, then register it with Migración Colombia and get your Cédula de Extranjería (foreigner ID) within 15 days of arrival.

Taxes on the Colombia nomad visa
Colombia considers you a tax resident once you spend more than 183 days — continuous or not — in any 365-day window, and residents are taxed on worldwide income. The nomad visa does not automatically make you a tax resident, but the days still count, so long uninterrupted stays can cross the line. Many nomads deliberately structure their time to stay under 183 days; if you plan to settle in for the full two years, take Colombian tax advice early.
This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your home country and any tax treaty. See our guide to nomad visa taxes and confirm with a qualified adviser.
Bringing your family
Family members don't ride on a single income multiplier the way they do in Spain or Portugal. Instead, a spouse and children are added through separate beneficiary visas tied to your status, and the main applicant's income is what's measured against the 3× minimum-wage threshold. It's workable for families, but plan each person's paperwork individually rather than expecting one combined figure.
How Colombia compares
Among the Americas, Colombia is the low-cost, low-friction option. Mexico's temporary-resident route asks for noticeably higher income or large savings, Costa Rica's rentista wants US$3,000 a month, and Brazil sits in between. Colombia undercuts most of them on both the income bar and the paperwork — no criminal check, no interview, fully online — which is why it punches above its weight with nomads. What it doesn't offer is a residency path; for that, Mexico or a European program is the better bet.
| Country | Min income | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| 5,240,600 COP/mo (≈ $1,610) | 2 years, not renewable | |
| 79,800 MXN/mo (≈ $4,550) | 1 year, renewable up to 4 years | |
| $3,000/mo | 1 year, renewable up to 2 years | |
| $1,450/mo | 2 years, renewable |
What applicants actually run into
The single thing to get right is the bank statements. Because each month must independently clear the threshold and the Ministry converts on its own reference rate, applicants with borderline or variable income get refused for a month that dipped — so aim comfortably above the line and keep three clean, consecutive statements. The motivation letter matters more than people expect; a clear, specific description of your remote work reads far better than a generic template. And don't forget the 15-day window to register for your Cédula after arrival — missing it causes avoidable headaches.
