Who can get the Bermuda nomad visa

While it ran, the certificate was open to two groups: people employed by or running a business registered and operating outside Bermuda that did no business on the island, and non-Bermudian students enrolled in a research, undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral program. You had to be at least 18. Bermudians could not apply — it was designed to bring outside remote income onto the island, not to reclassify locals.

  • Accepts: Remote employees, Freelancers, Business owners
  • ! Private health insurance required
  • ! Criminal-record check required
  • Age: 18+
  • Not open to citizens of Bermuda

The income requirement in detail

Bermuda never set a number. Instead of a monthly threshold pegged to a wage or benchmark, the policy asked you to "demonstrate sufficient means and/or a continuous source of annual income" to support your household without working locally. In practice that put the onus on you to prove, through bank statements and an employment or business relationship, that you could carry Bermuda's cost of living. Because groceries, rent, and utilities on the island run far above US or UK levels, applicants generally needed a comfortably high income even though no figure was ever published.

Documents you'll need

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of remote employment or business ownership with a company based and operating outside Bermuda (or a student enrolment letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient means or continuous annual income to self-support in Bermuda
  • Valid health insurance covering your stay
  • Declaration of good character with no indictable-offence conviction

Taxes on the Bermuda nomad visa

This was the real draw. Bermuda has no personal income tax, no capital-gains tax, and no tax on foreign-source earnings, so a certificate holder working remotely for an overseas employer owed Bermuda nothing on that income. Bermuda's payroll tax is charged to local employers on local employment, which a Work From Bermuda holder did not have. You would still be taxed by your home country under its own rules, and US citizens remained on the hook to the IRS regardless of where they lived.

This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your home country and any tax treaty. See our guide to nomad visa taxes and confirm with a qualified adviser.

Bringing your family

Families could relocate together. A spouse and dependent children were added to the same application, and there was no per-dependant income uplift — the government looked at whether the household as a whole had the means to live on the island. Given Bermuda's school fees and cost of living, the practical bar for a family was high even without a formal number attached to it.

How Bermuda compares

Bermuda belonged to the small club of zero-tax Atlantic and Caribbean programs alongside the Cayman Islands, Anguilla, and the Bahamas. All of them skip an income requirement in favour of high cost or high fees. Bermuda's certificate fee was cheap next to Cayman's Global Citizen route and Anguilla's US$2,000 charge, but its cost of living was the highest of the group. With the certificate now closed, a nomad chasing the same tax profile would look at the Cayman Islands, Anguilla, or Bermuda's own five-year annual-residence permission instead.

What applicants actually run into

The certificate itself was easy to get; affording the island was the hard part. Rent for a one-bedroom often ran past US$2,500 a month, and imported groceries and cars pushed budgets far beyond what the fee suggested. That mismatch — a trivial application over a punishing cost base — is what most former holders warn about. The other thing to plan for now is timing: because Work From Bermuda closed in February 2025, do not build a move around it. If Bermuda is still the goal, ask Immigration directly about annual-residence permission, which is a different application with its own approvals.

Bermuda digital nomad visa: FAQ

Is the Work From Bermuda visa still available in 2026?
No. The Government of Bermuda stopped accepting Work From Bermuda One Year Residential Certificate applications on 28 February 2025. People who want to relocate to Bermuda now are directed to 'Permission to Reside on an Annual Basis', which can be granted for up to five years.
Did Bermuda have a minimum income requirement for remote workers?
No fixed figure was ever published. Applicants had to show 'sufficient means and/or a continuous source of annual income' to support themselves without local employment. Because Bermuda's cost of living is very high, that effectively meant a high income even without a stated threshold.
Do you pay income tax in Bermuda as a remote worker?
No. Bermuda has no personal income tax, no capital-gains tax, and no tax on foreign earnings, so certificate holders paid nothing to Bermuda on remote income. Your home country may still tax you, and US citizens remain liable to the IRS.
How much did the Work From Bermuda certificate cost?
The application fee was around US$275, paid online through gov.bm. That was cheap compared with programs like Anguilla or the Cayman Islands — the expense of living in Bermuda, not the fee, was the real cost.
Could you bring your family to Bermuda on the certificate?
Yes. A spouse and dependent children were added to the same application with no per-person income uplift. The government assessed whether the household as a whole had the means to live in Bermuda.
What replaced the Work From Bermuda program?
The Department of Immigration now points applicants to 'Permission to Reside on an Annual Basis', a separate route that can be approved for periods of up to five years. It is not the same fast online remote-work certificate and has its own requirements.
