Who can get the Aruba nomad visa
The program is aimed at US nationals with a valid passport, who uniquely may stay in Aruba for up to 90 days visa-free. You must work remotely for a company based outside Aruba, or be self-employed with clients outside Aruba. What you cannot do is provide services to, or earn income from, an Aruban company or person; that requires a proper work or business permit.
Because it runs on tourist status, there's no minimum income, no degree requirement, and no background check. Travellers of other nationalities can visit Aruba too, but their permitted length and conditions follow standard tourist rules rather than this US-focused 90-day framing.
- ✓ Accepts: Remote employees, Freelancers, Business owners
- ✓ No health-insurance requirement
- ✓ No criminal-record check
- • Not open to citizens of Aruba
The income requirement in detail
There's no fixed income requirement. You self-certify that you work remotely for a non-Aruban employer or business, and immigration may ask — as it can of any tourist — for proof of sufficient funds, a return or onward ticket, and accommodation. This is a low-bar, low-commitment arrangement rather than a means-tested visa.
The trade-off for that simplicity is that it gives you nothing beyond 90 days: no residency, no path to staying longer, and no dependant framework beyond everyone entering as tourists.
How to apply for the Aruba nomad visa
There's no visa application. You book your trip, arrange a return ticket, and complete Aruba's online Embarkation-Disembarkation (ED) card before travel, selecting "One Happy Workation" as your purpose of visit. Many hotels package the stay with workation-friendly amenities, but that's marketing, not a legal requirement.
On arrival you're admitted as a tourist for up to 90 days. If you want to stay closer to the full 90, you can request an extension at the local immigration office, provided you don't exceed the cap.
- 1Confirm you hold a valid US passport and work remotely for an employer or business based outside Aruba.
- 2Book your stay — many hotels offer One Happy Workation packages — and arrange a return or onward ticket.
- 3Complete Aruba's online Embarkation-Disembarkation (ED) card before you travel and select 'One Happy Workation' as your purpose of visit.
- 4Arrive in Aruba and stay up to 90 days on tourist status.
- 5If you want to use the full 90 days, request an extension at the local immigration office, staying within the 90-day cap.
Documents you'll need
- Valid US passport
- Completed online ED (Embarkation-Disembarkation) card naming One Happy Workation as the purpose of visit
- Return or onward air ticket
- Proof of accommodation in Aruba
- Evidence of sufficient funds for the stay, if requested
- Proof of remote employment or self-employment with a non-Aruban company, if requested
Taxes on the Aruba nomad visa
A stay capped at 90 days doesn't make you an Aruban tax resident, and because your income is earned outside Aruba, you owe no Aruban income tax during the workation. Your tax home stays wherever you're normally resident, which for most people using this program is the US. Treat it as a convenience, not a tax strategy.
This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your home country and any tax treaty. See our guide to nomad visa taxes and confirm with a qualified adviser.
Bringing your family
There's no dependant mechanism because there's no visa. A partner, spouse, or children travel as ordinary tourists under the same 90-day allowance, each completing their own ED card. No income test or family surcharge applies, and no one is tied to anyone else's status.
How Aruba compares
Against real Caribbean nomad visas, One Happy Workation is the lightest-touch and the shortest. Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, and Curaçao — Aruba's Dutch neighbour — all offer twelve-month remote-work stays with income tests and formal applications. Aruba offers none of that structure and none of the length. It's the right pick if you want three easy months with zero paperwork, and the wrong one if you want to actually relocate.
| Country | Min income | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| No fixed income floor | 3 months, not renewable | |
| No fixed income floor | 6 months, renewable up to 1 year | |
| $50,000/yr | 1 year, renewable | |
| $50,000/yr | 2 years, not renewable | |
| No fixed income floor | 1 year, renewable up to 3 years | |
| $70,000/yr | 1 year, renewable |
What applicants actually run into
The practical thing to understand is that this is a holiday you happen to work through, not a move. The 90-day clock is firm, so plan your exit; overstaying tourist status is a real problem, not a formality. Keep evidence you can show if asked — remote-employment proof, a return ticket, and funds — even though it's rarely demanded at entry.
The most common mistake is treating it as a nomad visa and expecting to renew or convert it. You can't. When the 90 days are up you leave, and re-entering later starts a fresh tourist stay rather than extending this one. If your goal is a full year in the Dutch Caribbean, Curaçao's dedicated remote-work visa is the closer fit.
